We recommend that the activity field in the hour log has dropdown options so that there is better reporting around the activities. However, sometimes, volunteers would like to add new activities that are not listed in the dropdown. Here's how you would enable your site to allow this and what the workflow looks like.
How to enable new activity entries:
Go to your Organizer Dashboard
Click on Settings, then More Settings
Click on Other Configurations, under "Allow New Activity Entry", select Yes, then click on Save.
What happens when a volunteer adds a new entry
When a volunteer is submitting a new entry and you have the "New activity entry" enabled, they will have an option in the dropdown to add new activity. When that is selected, there will be a free text field to add the new activity name.
Then, after the time is submitted, in your Organizer Dashboard, under the Report Summary section, there is a tab called New Activities. If there is a number in the parenthesis, that means there are pending new activities that have been submitted.
When you click the tab, the new activity will be listed for you to ignore or accept.
If you accept, then that activity will be added to the list for other volunteers to select in the future. If you reject, the activity will not be listed in the dropdown.
